Support
Need help with Tally Pro? You’re in the right place. If you can’t find an answer below, email support@peterholdmann.com and I’ll get back to you directly — this app is built and supported by one person, so you’ll be talking to the developer, not a support queue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which switchers does Tally Pro support?
Tally Pro currently supports the full BlackMagic ATEM family — ATEM Mini, Mini Pro, Mini Pro ISO, Mini Extreme, Television Studio HD/4K/8K, Constellation, and any ATEM model with a network connection.
Do I need any special hardware?
Not beyond your network connected switcher. Tally Pro connects directly to your switcher over your existing local network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet). There’s no dongle, receiver, or additional hardware to buy.
Does Tally Pro need an internet connection?
No. Tally Pro only communicates with your switcher on your local network. It does not require, or use, an internet connection to function.
Is there a subscription?
No. Tally Pro is a one-time purchase. No subscriptions, no recurring charges, no account required.
Can I use Tally Pro on more than one device at once?
Yes. Tally Pro doesn’t limit how many devices can connect to your switcher simultaneously — run it on as many phones, tablets, and computers as you need for your production. There may be limits on the connections your switcher supports, but we do not limit it.
Troubleshooting
The app can’t find or connect to my switcher
- Confirm the network. Your switcher and your device (phone, tablet, or computer) must be on the same local network. If your switcher is on a separate VLAN or a wired-only network segment, your device may not be able to reach it over Wi-Fi.
- Try the IP address directly. If auto-discovery doesn’t find your switcher, find its IP address in the switcher’s own network settings and enter it manually in the app.
- Check for IP changes. If your switcher gets its IP address automatically (DHCP), it’s possible the address changed since you last connected. Re-check the current IP on the switcher itself.
- Restart the connection. Close and reopen the app, or use the Disconnect/Reconnect option if your switcher’s IP hasn’t changed but the connection has stalled.
Local Network permission was denied (iOS/macOS)
Tally Pro requires Local Network permission to talk to your switcher. If you accidentally denied this when prompted:
- iOS: Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, and enable Tally Pro.
- macOS: Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, and enable Tally Pro.
You may need to relaunch the app after changing this setting.
Tally states seem delayed or stuck
This is almost always a Wi-Fi signal issue rather than an app issue. Tally Pro reads state changes from your switcher in real time, so a lag usually means packet loss between your device and the switcher. Try moving closer to your access point, switching to a 5GHz network if you’re on a crowded 2.4GHz band, or using a wired connection on the switcher side if your network supports it.
The connection drops randomly during a show
Tally Pro automatically attempts to reconnect if the connection drops. If this is happening frequently and consistently, it’s usually one of the following:
- Your device’s Wi-Fi is going to sleep in the background — check your device’s power/battery settings for Wi-Fi or background activity restrictions
- Another device or app on the network is causing congestion
- Your router is dropping idle local connections after a timeout period
If you’re running a critical show, I’d recommend a quick connectivity test ahead of time on the actual network you’ll be using, not just at home.
An input is missing or named incorrectly
Input names are read directly from your switcher’s configuration. If a name looks wrong or an input isn’t appearing, double-check the input labels set in your switcher’s own software/control panel — Tally Pro mirrors whatever your switcher reports.
Requesting Support for a New Switcher
Tally Pro currently supports BlackMagic ATEM switchers, with support for additional switcher brands in active development. If you’d like to see your switcher supported, I want to hear about it.
When you write in, it helps to include:
- The exact make and model of your switcher
- Whether it has a network port (Ethernet or Wi-Fi)
- Any documentation you have on its control protocol or API, if you know of any (not required — just helpful if you have it)
Switchers currently being evaluated for future support include vMix and Roland Smart Tally. If you use either of these and would be willing to help test a beta build once one is available, mention that in your email — early testers make a real difference in getting new switcher support right.
